ban : ban

생김새가 아름답고 빛나다
creating something beautiful and luminous

STORY

I believe nature is the greatest art, art that embraces every human.  I think many people would agree because we travel into nature to take a break, to meditate, and to be inspired. I wanted to mimic nature in a smaller form that we can place within our surroundings. I wanted to create art that makes us take a break, to meditate and to be inspired.
“木火土金水” are the five elements of nature in Asian culture. I used natural materials from all over the world to represent the 5 elements, then recreated nature as an art object.  I create functional art that works as sculpture as well as lighting.  I wish the viewer to pause from reality to meditate and to be inspired by watching the art that condenses the world of nature.

“ban : ban” is the artist's nickname.

It has two different meanings in Korean language.  First, it means that something or someone is beautiful and luminous.  The other meaning is half and half.  The half-sculptural and half-functional art that “ban : ban” creates is both beautiful and useful.

MATERIAL

“木火土金水” are the five elements of nature in Asian culture, which are "wood, fire, earth, metal, water.”  I try to reinterpret the 5 elements in a new way with new substances.  “土”(earth) is the base of my sculpture made with mineral clay. I mix oyster shell fragments, which represent “水” (water), with mineral clay to give an unexpected texture on the surface.  I use preserved flowers as “木” (wood) and natural crystal stones as “金” (metal) to decorate.  For “火”(fire), color-changing smart lighting is used to create a surreal atmosphere.
